Atopic dermatitis usually begins in childhood. It is estimated that its prevalence among Norwegian children is around 15 -20%, which is not infrequent. Many will grow out of it, while some do persist into adulthood. In adolescents with atopic dermatitis, it is essential that they make their career choice with care as this has much implications to their disease progress. For example, for hairdressers, car mechanical technicians, housecleaners, nurses etc, they are more likely to be exposed to water and other irritants for a prolonged period of time which makes eczema linger or worsen.
